Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
