This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like typical biological terror, but within Together lies a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
